Chronic insomnia is the most common sleep disorder. At least 40 percent of adults in the United States of America experience insomnia. Chronic insomnia increases the risk of high blood pressure, weakens the immune system, affects the mood and reduces stamina.

Chronic insomnia can even lead to depression and anxiety. Sleep deprivation may increase the risk of having an accident because it has the potential to impair mental skills and balance.

Research studies have shown that yoga can improve the quality of sleep through different mechanisms. As a kind of holistic practice that integrates mind and body, yoga calms the mind, boosting the mood and improving the quality of life.

Studies have found that yoga practitioners have better quality of sleep than those who don't practice yoga. Yoga helps to decrease the time needed to fall asleep. Studies found that yoga practitioners have less need of medications for insomnia and anxiety.

A study done on college students and professors showed that Yoga Nidra and meditation helped them to reduce anxiety and stress (1).

It is important to understand that everybody's body is unique. A yoga class adjusted to the needs and motivations of each individual person is crucial to accomplish personal goals. At the end of the day, everybody wants to feel good in their bodies and minds. Yoga can help with that.

Yoga is not the only mind-body practice that can help with sleep. Tai Chi, for example, has the same benefits that conventional exercise has to improve sleep according to a study study that was published by JAMA in February 2021 (6).
